The deputy chief of Waltham Police is now acting chief of the department.
Kevin O’Connell was appointed acting chief of Waltham Police on Thursday, a day after former chief Keith MacPherson retired.
The new acting chief has been with WPD for 27 years. Before he became deputy chief in 2017, captain O’Connell served as the head of patrol, the department’s largest division.
On Thursday morning, O’Connell took the former chief’s spot as chair of the city’s traffic commission.
Congrats to Kevin and his family!
Eventually mayor Jeannette McCarthy will recommend a permanent chief for confirmation by the city council.
Former chief MacPherson served as acting chief before ultimately being appointed to the top job in 2014.
