Cardinal Cottage on the Fernald property dates all the way back to 1849.

Mayor Jeannette McCarthy and other Waltham officials are restoring the historic building to convert it into housing.

For phase one, $1.2 million was spent on exterior renovations. That process is complete.

Phase two will involve renovating the interior to create two 2-bedroom affordable units.

McCarthy said the funding will come from the city’s Affordable Housing Trust and Community Preservation Act (CPA) monies.

She also promised that both units would be actually affordable.
