Linden Street Bridge Restoration Moving Ahead

The state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has authorized a contractor to start a $2 million project to restore the Linden Street Bridge.

A DCR spokesperson said the project is in the mobilization phase as officials await final approval of the plans.

The project will involve some work on the underside of the bridge and in the roadway below. DCR said it will provide timely notification of any potential traffic impacts.

The projected completion timeframe is Summer/Fall 2025, DCR said.

Built in 1894 and spanning 98 feet, the former Central Massachusetts Railroad bridge is one of only three such steel truss bridges remaining in Massachusetts.

The Linden Street Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

When the current work is completed, the restored bridge will connect two sections of the Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT) in Waltham, which is owned and maintained by DCR.

The majority of the 2.75 mile trail in Waltham was finished in 2023, but the bridge restoration was not part of the project.

As a result, trail users heading east must descend a ramp to Linden Street and attempt to reconnect with the trail on the other side.
