Displaced Residents Rescued from 4-Alarm Fire
Waltham first responders rescued some residents from an aggressive four-alarm blaze Tuesday at 76–78 High Street.
Firefighters responding around noon found heavy smoke pouring from the rear of the multi-family residence.
One resident struggling to exit from the third floor was helped by responding Waltham firefighters.
"Ladder 2 threw a ground ladder and rescued a 77-year-old man over the ladder and brought him to safety," said a release from Waltham Fire. "That resident was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital for evaluation."

Waltham Police officers on scene before fire companies arrived made contact with the man, but were pushed back by heavy smoke. But they did rescue three other residents on lower floors, safely escorting them out of the building, said Lt. Mike Murphy of Waltham Fire.
Heavy fire on the third floor eventually burst through the roof. All firefighters were ordered out of the building around 12:45 p.m.
Multiple communities assisted Waltham. "In all, 10 Waltham Fire Companies responded, plus WFD command staff and 12 mutual aid companies from cities and towns including Newton, Belmont, Cambridge, Weston and Watertown," said Lt. Murphy.
Ten to fifteen residents were displaced, and the Red Cross offered assistance to them.
The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) also provided food, water and additional support and will work with the Waltham corps to identify additional needs.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Waltham Fire and Police Departments and the State Fire Marshal’s office.
