Waltham schools superintendent Marisa Mendonsa returned to work this week after successful surgery for breast cancer.

“I am happy to report that post double mastectomy, my margins are clear and at this time, there is no need for further treatments!” she wrote in a letter to the entire WPS community Monday. “I am so thankful to have caught this early and look forward to clear screenings over the next 5 years.”

Mendonsa went on leave on January 15. She said she plans to return to full days next week.

The superintendent was emotional during Wednesday’s school committee meeting as she thanked the school community and Waltham for their support [see video above]. A sneaker coloring contest for Waltham students received 800 entries.

“The supportive messages, pink days, check-ins and sneaker coloring contest bolstered my spirits and kept me going!” Mendonsa said.

“I truly cannot imagine navigating this anywhere else. The spirit of Waltham has shown itself in ways I cannot put into words. My family—especially my mom—continues to be in awe of the unwavering support from this community.”
